APWA-Pakistan
Yousuf Goth Primary School
Initially APWA started a primary school consisting of two classes at Yousuf Goth in an old Government school building with the permission of Education Department. Later a completely new building was constructed by courtesy of a donor. It is a very well built double story building with 13 airy spacious rooms. APWA initiated classes in the newly constructed building with primary classes that would be upgraded to secondary level. Since the community is a victim of poverty, therefore it has been a great challenge for APWA's project team to motivate the community to send their girl child to school. Considering this, school uniforms and course books were provided by APWA. Now there has been a great pressure from the community to start the boys session in the afternoon which will commence as early as possible.
Apart from the education project, APWA is considering to setup a health centre or to start a mobile medical unit, which will carry Doctor and a paramedic to the surrounding Goths where no clinic and hospital exist. This area is vast and Goths are at distance from each other with only dust tracts leading to them. Under these harsh conditions, only a mobile unit can provide health care facility. APWA is now looking forward to a generous supporter to come forward.
The annual prize distribution ceremony of APWA Ra’ana School at Yousuf Goth was held on 15th April 2010. APWA members, parents of the students, community women, sat under the shade of a Shamiana, though it was uncomfortably hot under the ten - there were no loudspeakers, a hand mike was used. In spite of all these drawbacks, the audience thoroughly enjoyed the programme. The ceremony started with recitation of the Holy Quran followed by a ‘Naat. What was so amazing was the hidden talent in these young girls which came to the forefront with a little encouragement. songs, luddi, modern dancing each item was appreciated with loud applause.
The last item was the prize distribution. APWA members gave out prizes to 1st, 2nd and 3rd position holders.
This was a pleasant and memorable occasion.
